Build Your Child's Vocabulary!
The more word's your child knows, the better he or she will be for learning to read.
Give new words meaning:
- When you say a new word, try to explain it in a way your child will understand. For example: "That is a tractor. It moves dirt. Farmers use tractors to get their big gardens ready." or "That is a violet. A violet is a small flower. Some violets, like that one are purple."
- Avoid "baby talk". Use the real names for things. This will help your child when learning to read in school.
- Keep reading to your child every day. Pause to explain new words. Stop at times to ask your child what a word means. Point to pictures. Ask your child to name things in them.
- Don't pressure or quiz your child. Learning should be fun, not work. Children learn best when they get to play with words. That's why games, poems, and songs are great ways to learn.
